“Hemp”, a soft; durable fibre, is cultivated from the plants of the Cannabis family. Hemp has been cultivated for industrial and commercial (non-drug) use for centuries. One of the earliest domesticated plants, Hemp is one of the fastest growing biomasses known producing up to 25 tonnes of dry matter per hectare per year. In fertile places like Nepal hemp can grow in almost any natural habitat. Hemp has many faces around the world but in most cases it is a very highly reputed plant. In very old cultures like Nepal, China and Japan, people have a very deep connection with the plant and use it in their daily lives for purposes like food, medicine, building material, composite material, making paper, making animal bedding, water and soil purification, fuel and of course for weaving fibers and fabrics.

People commonly mistake hemp and marijuana or ganja to be the same thing, which in fact is a misunderstanding. Marijuana or Ganja is the term for the plant cannabis, one of whose use is for smoking; whereas hemp is processed fiber, which cannot be used for the purpose of smoking.
